(10-25)

(10-26)

(10-27)
Read PC pp. 42-52

(11-2)
Rewrite summary

(11-3)
Read "Smoking," pp. 31-33, Core book, and write Sum.-Response for Tue. at 11:00. Good luck!

(11-5)
Rewrite "Smoking" Summary-Response; make outline for argumentative essay on one of the following topics: Cigarette advertising; cigarette advertising directed at youth; government support of the tobacco industry; tighter control of youth smoking; criminalization of smoking in bars (California). Get outline approved. Read "The Tobacco Industry," and fit it into the outline.

(11-6)
Write a summary of "The Tobacco Industry: How Corporate Influence Kills." Include the reference with author (INFACT), date, title, place, URL (that is the web address that has the letters http in it). Now, rewrite your outline, showing how you will use information from "The Tobacco Industry..." in the argumentative synthesis essay that you are planning. Hand in your rewritten outline (#2). THEN, find another article from the library. You can use the LINK above, or, if that doesn't work, go to netscape; open up the CESL page; Student Page; Research & Library; full-text materials; Infotrack searchbank; Proceed; Expanded Academic ASAP. Type in "Smoking" for starters. When you choose an article, choose articles from magazines like "Newsweek" that are more manageable. Bring a copy of the article on Monday. You will need to hand in a copy with your essay. Good luck!!

(11-10) Finish your argumentative synthesis. Be sure to include, as mentioned in class: Introduction, clear argumentative thesis, two or three complete, well-supported paragraphs with clear topic sentences, conclusion, use of two sources, one of which is "The Tobacco Industry...," references in alphabetical order, proper paraphrasing/quoting.

Midterm is on FRIDAY. Midterm will be an argumentative essay ONLY. You will be given one article and will be expected to write an argumentative essay, using information from that article, in two hours. Be careful to quote and/or paraphrase carefully.

(11-12) Don't forget to keep rewriting until you have good copies of everything. The Summary-response should already be rewritten, and so should the two summaries (1-Coping with Stress, 2- The Tobacco Industry). Rewrite the Argumentative Synthesis by next TUE.

(11-16) As a group, collate the answers to your questions so that you have ONE table of information that includes all responses. Print up that table and make five copies. Now, use another group's table to write a paragraph. Put general statements first; use their facts as evidence. Use "according to."
' Then, begin working on your mini-report. Use YOUR group's table and YOUR information. Write paragraphs for I, II, III, IV as specified in the handout. Mark each section with a bold title. Include your table at the end, marked as "Appendix I."

(11-17) Rewrite survey paragraph until it is ready for portfolio; prepare Mini-Survey Report for Thurs. at 9:00 AM. Include the following: reference to something read, in introduction, if possible; passive voice when talking about surveying actions ("we found that...." becomes "it was found that...")

The midterm is graded. To see your score, contact Mr. Leverett in F3229. Anyone with a score below 80 needs to set up a conference.

Begin to prepare your portfolio. Buy a new notebook. Put one clean copy of every paper in it. Save yourself some work by doing this part now!!

Have a good Thanksgiving break!!

(12-1 through 12-4) RESEARCH PROJECT. Please make sure that you do the interviews so that your partners can put together the data. In your report, concentrate on the following:
I. Introduction. The introduction is your largest and most important section. Discuss the general issue; discuss the specific issue; discuss what you wanted to find out with your report; discuss what you EXPECTED to find (your hypothesis). Note: It is possible that what you expected is different from what your partner expected...no problem!
II. Methods and Procedure: Tell what you did and why you asked who you did. Use passive voice.
III. Results. Tell what you found. In this section, it is important to put the most important findings first, and just generalize about the ones that are not as important to you. Also, be careful to put generalizations before facts; use the facts to support general statements about what people said.
IV. Discussion and Conclusion. This has two parts: Tell whether you found what you expected, (was your hypothesis confirmed?), and tell whether you found anything else, unrelated to your hypothesis. Are there any reasons why people may have answered what they did? How would you change the questions if you did it again?
V. References.
VI. Appendix. You may share with your group. It's important to include ALL the information, if possible, especially if you refer to it in the paper. It is not necessary to make a beautiful picture for each question. Do the best you can!

Research paper is due on TUESDAY DECEMBER 8 at 11:00 AM.

FINAL EXAM
Tue. 9:00, F3206. Summary-Response essay; topic will be provided. To study, review the way we write Summary-Response essays. There will be practice in class, Thursday & Friday of week 7.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

how old are you?
44. How about you? -TL

Good morning!! How's your kids? Nana
Fine. They like school. They're learning to read and write well. -TL

what did you do in your holiday?
Over Halloween, my son was sick and I stayed home. But in August, I went to Pennsylvania. It was nice!! -TL

What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie of all time was a very strange French movie called "Sundays and Cybele." It was about a pilot who lost his memory when he crashed in France. I can't remember why I liked it so much, actually.

How can I get some model writing to improve my writing ?
The book has a few; model argumentative essays are on pp. 103-108. I have not found too many model essays on the world-wide web, but there will be, soon. If you search the library under "Essay writing," you can find some, and you can also use the university writing lab, which is in Faner on the second floor, and which you can also reach through the CESL web page. Let me know if you have trouble finding it. -TL

Hello! How was your halloween break? This is Kiyoun. Could you tell me about my midterm. For example, when, what is the test about, and how I can be ready to do the test and so on.....You know, I would like to get a successful grade. Please, just give me direction to prepare for the test. That is what I have some question about...good-bye.
Halloween was OK, not great. The midterm is Fri., Nov. 13. It is an argumentative synthesis essay where you will have to read sources, use the sources, make an argument, develop the argument, etc., just like you are doing now. The best way to prepare is to study the things we are doing now...how to make an argumentative thesis statement; how to develop an argument; how to paraphrase and quote an author; how to organize your ideas into well-developed paragraphs; and how to write a reference. You will need all these skills and you will need to use them all in two hours on that Friday...good luck! -TL

Good morning! Mr. Leverett, How about your trip that you went to Taiwan this summer vacation? Did you have a good time there?
I had an excellent time in Taiwan. The food was wonderful. The people were very friendly. I was in a neighborhood in Kaohsiung where nobody spoke English, but I was able to get good seafood and have fun. I would like to go back someday. -TL
