USING THE WEB TO FIGHT PLAGIARISM: advice
The following comes from Martin Holmes.
"Alta Vista is, I think, the fastest search engine currently, and more important, it claims to index the entire contents of each page. In my experience, this is true. With the correct search syntax, it's incredibly powerful.
If you want to search for a specific string of text, put quotes round it:
"Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow"
If you are combining multiple search terms, you can use + and - :
+elephant (=MUST contain the word "elephant")
-lion (must NOT contain the word "lion")
You can use + and - before quoted strings of text too.
Finally, you can search a specific domain or host -- which means you can use Alta Vista to search any particular machine:
host: web.uvic.ca (this will search only on UVic's web server)
host: .ca (this will search only Canadian sites)
Combining a couple of these, you can search for:
+"English Language Centre" host: .ca
which should find all pages which mention English Language Centres on Canadian servers. For finding plagiarism, just take a piece of the student text and put it in quotes:
"Beethoven's story is one of personal triumph over tragedy and supreme musical achievement."
This should find any page containing this text. A killer tool for the online writing teacher indeed! Imagine being able to do that in the library..."
Thank you, Martin! -TL
Now, connect to Alta Vista.
USING THE INTERNET & TESL-L TO FIND PEOPLE
The following comes from the TESL-L listserv:
USING the LISTSERV SCAN FEATURE
Do you need to find a particular individual on the TESL-L list? Would
you like to contact an entire group of TESL-Lers in one particular
country or at one particular node?
You do? Hey, you do NOT have to get a list of all the members of TESL-L,
which is a file of over 23,000 lines. Use the SCAN feature, instead! SCAN
allows you to search for a netter or group of netters simply by entering
a fragment of the first name, last name, or even a fragment of the email
address, if you know it. SCAN IS very friendly and cooperative.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE TESL-L SCAN FEATURE
note: All SCAN requests must be addressed to LISTSERV@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU
SCAN requests should NOT come to ESLCC (this address)
An example of a scan request is the following line, sent to
LISTSERV@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (Note: neither the command nor the
address is case-sensitive)
SCAN TESL-L CARL
which will not only find anyone named CARL or CARLA but also anyone
with an address that includes CARL, such CARLETON.CA (Carleton
University, in Canada).
So, if you aren't sure whether a person has subscribed as Charles, or
Charlie, or Chuck, you can ask LISTSERV to check the list for all these
names...just send three separate SCAN queries in the same message, one on
each line, like this; be careful of the SPACES!
SCAN TESL-L CHARLES
SCAN TESL-L CHARLIE
SCAN TESL-L CHUCK
If you'd like to find a list of netters in Canada, you send the following
message; be careful of the SPACES!
SCAN TESL-L .CA
(.ca is the domain code for Canada; a list of registered Internet country
codes follows at the end of this message)
This message (be careful of the SPACES!):
SCAN TESL-L .JP
will yield a list of TESL-Lers in Japan.
In the extremely unlikely event that you run into trouble, your request for
help should be sent (as usual) to:
TESLHELP@CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU
