1. COURSE NUMBER: MUS 103 SEMESTER HOURS: 3
COURSE TITLE: Music Understanding
2. COURSE FORMAT: Lecture (faculty). Assisted by listening guides, students are expected to spend several hours each week listening to a wide variety of musical selections. Average enrollment: 250.
3. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will learn: (a) to recognize and identify details of rhythm, melody, harmony, tonality, timbre, form, dynamics, texture and style; (b) to identify the main characteristics of cultural development and primary musical characteristics of the Pre-Renaissance, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Twentieth Century Eras; and (c) to identify the contributions of key composers and performers in shaping Western musical tradition.
4. DETAILED COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for the undergraduate student who has little or no previous musical instruction. The primary goal of this course is to help you develop your aural skills to their fullest potential so that your listening experiences will be more rewarding and enjoyable. If you do not know how to read music, you will not be at a disadvantage, since the primary emphasis of the course is listening. You will be required to learn and understand the terminology that is associated with music. Required attendance at live concerts and recitals helps to broaden each student's personal experiences with varied musical styles.

- Multiple choice exams. Listening examples are part of every exam.
- Attendance at one live concert or recital.
