Interpreting and Speech to Text Services:
In order to insure that the needs of our students are met, SIUC has a staff person qualified to assist students who are deaf or hard of hearing. It is important that you follow the procedures described here when you request services.
If you intend to request sign language interpreters or speech to text services for classes, activities, appointments, or any SIUC sponsored events, please follow these procedures:
- As soon as you know you are coming to SIUC, make an appointment to open a case.
- Bring information about your hearing loss and your needs to the appointment. Generally, we would like to see reasonably current audiological assessments. We will consider other documentation on a case specific basis.
- Enter into and sign an accommodations agreement with a staff person of DSS.
- A one-time request for interpreters or other accommodations should be made for your academic classes for each semester. Any change or deviation (for example if a class time is changed) should be reported as soon as possible, to ensure appropriate coverage.
- The University will provide interpreters for study groups, appointments, library visits or other university-related needs. Students should fill out and return to DSS the Interpreter Request Form 48 hours prior to the need.
- DSS will determine which interpreters to assign to individual students. Our primary consideration is the communication preference stated by students.
- SIUC can often identify a third party, usually the state/federal Office of Rehabilitation Services (ORS), to pay for sign language interpreters and speech to text services. If no third party pays, the University covers the costs. In no case do students pay for necessary accommodations.
- If you have questions or concerns about the assignment of interpreters, please address them to Lisa Caringer or Kathleen Plesko. If these individuals fail to resolve your concerns, you may seek counsel and intervention from Dr. Seymour Bryson, Associate Chancellor for Diversity, for an impartial review of your problem. To request a review by Dr. Bryson, submit in writing the nature of your concerns and the resolution you are seeking.
- When you sign your Accommodations Agreement, you will receive a statement of your rights and University ADA Grievance Procedure. Please keep these documents and refer to them if you think your rights have been violated.
Please help us serve you well by making timely requests for assistance.
