History:

· Initiated in 1997 by Southern Illinois Regional Bicycle Trails Task Force with over 75 members from public agencies and local communities.

· Conceptual trail plan presented through two public information meetings; property acquisition, trail development and operation not addressed.

· Rend Lake Bicycle Trail, also founded in Regional Plan, has taken initiative and completed nearly eleven miles of trail.

· Regional Plan received over 200 letters of support for proposed 140 miles (estimated) of continuous off-road trail in nine counties.

Jackson County Plan:

· Initiated in January 2001 with Jackson County Board applying for (and later awarded) Illinois Department of Natural Resources Planning Grant.

· SIUC Office of Economic and Regional Development subcontracted to conduct planning; no property acquisition, trail development or operation included.

· Local citizens and public agency representatives make up 50+ member Task Force to ensure community representation toward project progression.

· Project Task Force investigates potential countywide route planning to connect communities and points of interest for the public good.
