Resolution to Request Clarification and Promulgation
of the Family and Medical Leave Policy
[as amended]

WHEREAS faculty have expressed concern regarding the clarity and uniform application of the Family and Medical Leave Policy at Southern Illinois University Carbondale -- most formally in the Report and Recommendations for Parental Leave Policy authored by University Women’s Professional Advancement in June, 2003; and

WHEREAS the University should guarantee equal treatment of all members of the University community eligible for family and medical leave;

BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate recommend the Human Resources Department review the current policy for clarity and appropriateness -- including the chain of communication when a request for coverage under the policy is made; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate recommend the University administration educate deans, department chairs, and other administrators about the implementation of the policy to ensure standardized application across departments and colleges, and, in addition, make the policy readily accessible to faculty, including an active link on the University web page.
