Resolution to Approve a Modification in the Social Studies Major
to the B.S. in Curriculum and Instruction

WHEREAS the state of Illinois has mandated that teacher certification in the Social Studies major be changed to certification in Social Science in order to reflect changes in the content focus of the program; and

WHEREAS the proposed changes do not affect the substance of the program which now includes preparation for secondary school as well as middle school teachers; and

WHEREAS there are no budgetary or staffing implications in the modification; and

WHEREAS participating programs, such as in History, have already accommodated the new requirements mandated by the state; and

WHEREAS the faculty in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the College of Education and Human Services have unanimously approved the modification;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that Faculty Senate approve the modification of the B.S. in Social Studies to the B.S. in Social Science offered by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education and Human Services.
