ATTACHMENT DResolution to Approve a Modification in the
Promotion Policies and Procedures for FacultyWHEREAS the current Promotion Policies and Procedures for Faculty is ambiguous with regard to the requirement of a chair’s recommendation letter in the dossier of a candidate seeking promotion to a Professor, when the chair holds a rank below a Professor; and
WHEREAS different colleges have been adopting different procedures, with one being the procedure of a Professor of the academic unit assuming the role of the chair in the evaluation of the candidate; and
WHEREAS a uniform procedure for the University would be desirable;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that Faculty Senate approve the modification to the Promotion Policies and Procedures for Faculty as stated below:
Under III. Decision Making Process, add the following after III. C.:In a case of promotion to Professor in an academic unit where there are two or more Professors and the chair/director of the unit holds a rank below that of Professor, then the chair shall excuse himself/herself from the duties described earlier in this section and in sections IV and V and the chair of the promotion committee of the academic unit shall write the recommendation of the committee.
