UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION POLICY COMMIITTEE
ATTACHMENT A

Resolution to Recommend Approval of the Turf Specialization to the
B.S. in Plant and Soil Science, College of Agricultural Sciences

WHEREAS more than ten thousand positions in the green industry, especially in turf, go unfilled in the state of Illinois each year, providing significant employment demand for graduates of appropriate degree programs; and

WHEREAS other degree program specializations in turf offer the same courses as those already offered in SIUC’s Plant and Soil Science major, they are just better structured and include extensive internship opportunities; and

WHEREAS the proposed specialization in turf provides this structure and these internships for thirty or more students interested in the program each year; and

WHEREAS there are no budgetary or staffing resources needed beyond those already available in the Department of Plant, Soil Science, and General Agriculture; and

WHEREAS no other programs on campus are affected by the proposed specialization;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Faculty Senate approve the creation of a Turf specialization to the B.S. in Plant and Soil Science, SIUC, effective Fall 2005.
