UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION POLICY COMMIITTEE
ATTACHMENT B

Resolution to Recommend Approval of the Name Change
for the Department of Geography and to Alter the
Special Interest Sequences Accordingly

WHEREAS the faculty in the Department of Geography at SIUC have long researched and taught in environmental resources, as well as geographic information science and weather and water resources; and

WHEREAS the discipline of geography is increasingly concerned with environmental and natural resources analysis, a fact which puts SIUC’s Department of Geography at the forefront of this field; and

WHEREAS the advantages of naming this department to reflect more accurately what its faculty do include the recruitment of undergraduate majors and graduate students into an appropriately modified curriculum; and

WHEREAS there are no budgetary or staffing implications for the proposed changes in the department name and curricular organization; and

WHEREAS the academic programs closest to geography, namely, Environmental Studies and Forestry, have provided their concurrences;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Faculty Senate approve the change in the name of the Department of Geography to the Department of Geography and Environmental Resources and the modest re-organization of the undergraduate curriculum to reflect this change, effective Summer 2004.
