UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION POLICY COMMITTEE
ATTACHMENT C

Resolution to Recommend Approval of the RME Proposal to Re-Structure
the College of Applied Sciences and Arts from
Seven Departments to Four Schools

WHEREAS for the past twelve years, budget reductions have created long-term, structural problems affecting all college units in the University, including the College of Applied Sciences and Arts (CASA), which require greater administrative efficiencies; and

WHEREAS early in 2003 the Provost’s Budget and Planning Task Force recommended administrative and programmatic changes in CASA to deal with additional budget cuts, which prompted the College to frame its own strategic plan, “ASA at 250,” with broad faculty participation; and

WHEREAS as a part of that plan the College has forwarded to the Provost a Reasonable and Moderate Extension (RME) proposal to re-structure administratively from seven departments to four schools, with the intention of saving CASA money; and

WHEREAS the College’s faculty workload and programmatic impacts of this re-organization are likely to be minimal, especially in the grouping of multiple programs together in larger administrative units, which is already the norm in CASA; and

WHEREAS the Undergraduate Education Policy Committee (UEPC ) has reviewed all the relevant documents and testimony, including those provided by the Dean of CASA and by the Faculty Association, and considered the concerns of the School of Art and Design about the name of one proposed administrative unit;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that on the recommendation of UEPC, the Faculty Senate approve the RME proposal from CASA to re-structure administratively from seven departments to four schools, subject to modification of the name for the unit administering programs in architecture, interior design, fashion design and merchandising.
