UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION POLICY COMMITTEE
ATTACHMENT DResolution to Recommend Approval of the RME Proposal from the
College of Applied Sciences and Arts to Change the Delivery Mode
of the B.S. in Advanced Technical Studies from On-Campus to Off-CampusWHEREAS years of budget reductions in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts (CASA) have necessitated difficult cut-backs in staffing in nearly all degree programs in the College, which have led some programs with high student demand to turn qualified students away; and
WHEREAS because of these budgetary problems and the recommendations of the Provost’s Budget and Planning Task Force, CASA engaged in a strategic review of its degree programs in terms of their productivity in research, teaching, and service; and
WHEREAS one result of this review was that a change in the delivery of the B.S. in Advanced Technical Studies as a program was consistent with both the College’s strategic plan and the need to re-allocate increasingly scarce resources to programs more central to the College’s mission; and
WHEREAS student demand for the B.S. in Advanced Technical Studies can be met by offering it off-campus by term faculty on a cost-recovery basis under the direction of the College’s Office of Off-Campus Academic Programs, which already administers four other degree programs; and
WHEREAS the only faculty member in the program on continuing appointment, Dr. John Magney, has agreed to accept appointment in the Department of Automotive Technologies, should the B.S. in Advanced Technical Studies be moved to off-campus delivery; and
WHEREAS the Undergraduate Education Policy Committee (UEPC) has reviewed all the relevant documents and testimony, including those provided by the Dean of CASA, by Professor Magney, and by the Faculty Association;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that on the recommendation of UEPC, Faculty Senate approve the Reasonable and Moderate Extension proposal from CASA to change the delivery mode of the B.S. in Advanced Technical Studies from on-campus to off-campus.
[Resolution passed UEPC by a show of hands, 5 yes - 4 no -1 abstention, 5/18/04]
