ATTACHMENT HResolution to Recommend Approval of the RME Proposal from the
College of Engineering to Eliminate the Mechanical Engineering
Technology Specialization in the B.S. in Engineering TechnologyWHEREAS enrollment in the Mechanical Engineering Technology specialization in the B.S. in Engineering Technology has been in decline for some time and is no longer central to the mission of either the College of Engineering (CoEngr) or the University; and
WHEREAS the Provost’s Budget and Planning Task Force recommended elimination of the program as a way to allocate scarce budgetary resources for other programs in the College; and
WHEREAS consultation with faculty in the College has been extensive and there is a consensus that elimination of the specialization is appropriate; and
WHEREAS the four faculty members in the program on continuing appointment have agreed to re-assignment to other units in the College; and
WHEREAS the special Faculty Senate panel convened to review the Reasonable and Moderate Extension (RME) from CoEngr and other documents on this program made a unanimous recommendation to accept the proposal to eliminate it, subject to assurances that equipment and facilities associated with the program remain at the disposal of the relevant faculty members and that students in the program have the opportunity to complete their degrees in a timely fashion, both assurances the Dean of the College has provided Undergraduate Education Policy Committee (UEPC); and
WHEREAS UEPC has carefully reviewed the documentation, including the position of the Faculty Association and the panel recommendations, on which this resolution is based, in light of the Faculty Senate “Protocol on the Elimination of Undergraduate Degree Programs” (passed February 11, 2003);
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that on the recommendation of UEPC, Faculty Senate approve the RME proposal from CoEngr to eliminate the Mechanical Engineering Technology specialization in the B.S. in Engineering Technology.
