Resolution to Recommend Review and Endorsement the
Idea of First-Year Student Learning-Living Outcomes

WHEREAS last year a university task force of faculty and staff was convened by Provost John M. Dunn and Vice Chancellor Larry Dietz to consider ways to promote the contributions that the university can make to our first-year students' learning in the residence halls; and

WHEREAS this task force took as its model the outcomes framed by peer institutions with large residential programs for first-year students and adapted them to SIUC's students and circumstances; and

WHEREAS Dr. William Zeller of the University of Michigan and Dr. Vincent Tinto of Syracuse University provided inspiration for how housing programs, together with the active involvement of faculty and staff across campus, can help the University to improve the retention of its undergraduate students; and

WHEREAS the task force prepared a document for discussion, especially among faculty, to facilitate the university's efforts to promote student learning outside the classroom; and

WHEREAS both Provost Dunn and Vice Chancellor Dietz recommend that the Faculty Senate review and endorse the idea of an outcomes statement as the beginning of this campus-wide discussion;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Faculty Senate review and endorse the idea of First-Year Student Learning-Living Outcomes [www.siu.edu/~facsenat/1stYearStud.pdf] to help students, housing, student affairs, and faculty to assess the larger learning experience of our first-year students with an eye to improving their retention at SIUC.
