Resolution to Reaffirm SIUC's Commitment to Creating and
WHEREAS it is the policy of Southern Illinois University Carbondale to provide equal opportunity and educational opportunities for all qualified persons, without discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, or marital status; and WHEREAS it is the policy of Southern Illinois University that all students, faculty, staff, and guests should be able to enjoy and work in an educational environment free from discriminatory harassment; and WHEREAS harassment of any person or group of persons based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, or veteran's status is a form of discrimination specifically prohibited within the SIUC community by the Board of Trustees; and WHEREAS a "guiding principle" of Southern 150 is to "recruit, hire and retain faculty that are diverse in terms of gender, racial/ethnic, national origin, sexual orientation, disability, cultural, socioeconomic, and religious differences, with the goal of reflecting the diversity of the larger society;" and WHEREAS the faculty of SIUC recognize the critical importance of striving to build a campus culture that accepts and celebrates the differences among all of us; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate reaffirms our commitment to creating and maintaining an environment for all faculty, staff, students, and their guests that is safe, nurturing, and enlightening and free from discrimination or harassment based upon race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, sexual orientation, family status; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate recommend that the Chancellor encourage all members of the SIUC community to strive to create such an environment.
