UNDERGRADUATE EDUCATION POLICY COMMITTEE
ATTACHMENT C

Resolution to Recommend Approval of the Change in the Name of the
B.S. in Recreation to the B.S. in Recreation Management

WHEREAS the Department of Health Education and Recreation in the College of Education and Human Services has submitted a Reasonable and Moderate Extension request to change the name of the B.S. in Recreation to the B.S. in Recreation Management; and

WHEREAS the department believes it is justified in making this proposal because the new title more accurately identifies the focus of both the graduate and undergraduate major, which prepares graduates "for positions in the management of leisure services"; and

WHEREAS the department also believes that "the proposed title reflects a more professional connotation to the major, thus improving the opportunities to recruit students"; and

WHEREAS objections to the use of the term "management" by the dean and faculty of the College of Business and Administration, based on accreditation concerns, are not convincing in light of the many degrees using the term already being offered in the Colleges of Agricultural Sciences, Applied Sciences and Arts, Liberal Arts, and Mass Communication and Media Arts; and

WHEREAS the term "management" has multiple meanings, besides the one privileged by the College of Business and Administration, which are entirely appropriate to these degrees both here and at other institutions with fully accredited colleges of business and administration;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate recommend approval of the change in the name of the B.S. in Recreation to the B.S. in Recreation Management as proposed by the Department of Health Education and Recreation in College of Education and Human Services.
