in German with the Proposed Baccalaureate Program in German Studies, thereby
Modifying Both the Curricular Content and Nomenclature of the Existing Major,
Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, College of Liberal ArtsWHEREAS the proposed modification to the existing baccalaureate program in German will diversify the curriculum of the traditional course of study within the German major in order to offer a program more appealing to students interested in a degree program in foreign languages that is more closely tailored to the job market; and
WHEREAS the proposed modification will change the name of the major from German to German Studies, thereby more accurately reflecting the proposed changes in the program curriculum; and
WHEREAS the proposed major in German Studies, by drawing on a number of academic units outside the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, will provide a broader range of courses to better prepare students for the general workforce; and
WHEREAS graduates of the German Studies degree program will still be qualified to teach high school German or to enter graduate programs in German, German Studies, or Linguistics; and
WHEREAS the proposal to update the German curriculum is a direct result of findings from the Department's most recent internal and external reviews, the recommendations of then Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost John Jackson, as well as conclusions drawn from the Department's Internal Assessment Plan for German; and
WHEREAS this proposal is supported not only by the host department but also all affected educational units on campus in which selected required courses will be offered (i.e.: History, Speech Communications, Art and Design, Economics, Philosophy, and Political Science); and
WHEREAS the proposed changes will be accommodated within the current teaching loads of participating faculty and the administrative duties associated with management of the program will be handled by existing staff; and the implementation of this undergraduate program will not require additional equipment, facilities, or budget;
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate approve and recommend to the appropriate administrative bodies this College's request modify its existing undergraduate degree program in German with the proposed German Studies Major, and that the 2003-2004 SIUC Undergraduate Catalog be edited in all instances appropriate to reflect this change effective Fall semester, 2002.
