Resolution Resolution to Create a University Task Force to
Develop Formal Procedures for Understanding and
Addressing Faculty Retention

WHEREAS excellence in teaching, research, and service requires highly qualified and committed faculty; and

WHEREAS Southern at 150 is committed to retaining all such faculty excluding retirements and terminations for cause; and

WHEREAS clear retention efforts require data that informs as to the reasons faculty decide to stay at SIUC and reasons faculty decide to leave SIUC, and currently none is available; and

WHEREAS faculty reasons for leaving are likely highly individualized by personal (e.g., gender, family, culture, location) as well as professional (e.g., workload, climate, resources, dual-career couple) reasons;

BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate recommend that the Provost create a task force to develop a formal and sustainable mechanism for data collection pertaining to faculty retention issues;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the information collected be used to develop clear goals for faculty retention as well as strategies, policies and procedures for retention purposes.
