Attachment 2

2002 Policy:

All earned grades carrying quality point values are considered when computing students' grade point averages, including each earned grade in a repeated course that is taken prior to Summer 1996. Effective with courses taken Summer 1996 though Summer 2002, only the last grade of the subsequently repeated course will count in the grade point average even it the last grade is an F. The courses must be from the same institution.

Starting with Fall 2002 the repeat grade policy allows a student to repeat a course taken during or since summer 1996 one time only for the purpose of having the first attempts hours and points removed from the grade-point-average (gpa) calculations. Regardless of the grade obtained during the second attempt, it is the grade that will be used in calculating gpa. Additional repeat of a course beyond the first repeat will have no effect on gpa, although the transcript will indicate all grades obtained in sequential order and the subsequent course may be used to fulfill certain requirement. The courses must be from the same institution.

Proposed Amended Policy:

All earned grades carrying quality point values are considered when computing students' grade point averages, including each earned grade in a repeated course taken. Limits to the number of times a course can be repeated may be established by individual units and departments. All grades earned for the initial and all subsequent attempts will be factored into the GPA calculation. Each attempt in repeating a course will be clearly identified and noted on the student transcript. The courses must be from the same institution.
