The Society was originally founded by William S. Minor under the name of Creative Ethics Group and through a number of name changes has come down to us today as the Society for Philosophy of Creativity.

Through its several divisions, the Society is the working arm of the Foundation for Philosophy of Creativity in as much as the papers and activities, wherein research into creativity is performed, are presented at the various divisional meetings.

At present there are four divisions: Eastern, Central, Pacific, and the American Academy of Religion (AAR); the first three of these divisions have their annual meetings in conjuction with the respective divisional meeting of the APA and the AAR meets independently.
