Deborah J. Nelson - Associate General Counsel
Deborah J. Nelson, originally of Mahomet, Illinois,
serves as Associate General Counsel (SIUC). Ms. Nelson is a graduate
of Southern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University
School of Law. Ms. Nelson began her career as a staff attorney for
the Legislative Reference Bureau in Springfield, Illinois. As a
staff attorney, Ms. Nelson drafted bills, amendments and conference
committee reports for the legislators. She also organized and planned
special re-codification projects of state statutes. Ms. Nelson then
accepted a position as the Assistant City Attorney of the City of
Carbondale, Illinois. In that position, she represented the City
in a variety of capacities, including prosecuting ordinance violations
and assisting the City Attorney in providing legal services to the
City. She was promoted to City Attorney in 2003. As City Attorney,
Ms. Nelson was the chief legal representative for the City. She
was responsible for representing and advising the City Council,
City Manager, and staff on all legal matters involving the City
of Carbondale including labor and collective bargaining matters.
Ms. Nelson advises the University on a wide-variety
of legal issues, including real estate matters, labor and employment,
bankruptcy, purchasing and procurement issues, contracts, leases,
and affiliations agreements, policy review, governmental affairs,
court of claims cases, appellate matters, Family Educational Privacy
Rights Act, and Freedom of Information Act issues. Ms. Nelson is
the collective bargaining attorney for SIU School of Medicine.
Ms. Nelson is a member of the Board of Directors
for Carbondale Crimestoppers and Carbondale D.A.R.E., Southern Illinois
University Alumni Association, Illinois Bar Association, National
Association of College and University Attorneys, and the Jackson
County Bar Association.
