Meeting Minutes for February 19, 2008

I. Call to Order

            The meeting was called to order at 7:01 PM.

II. Roll Call

Trey Gossett (Art and Design), Ed Ford (Educational Psychology), Kyle Stevens (Law), Lance Camp (Law), Cord Wittig (Law), Andrea Jones (Law), Kristina Dzara (Sociology), Mike Stahl (Zoology), Gargi Bhattacharya (Psychology), Janet Mayher (Graduate Council), Jonathan Remo (Graduate Council), Sara Samson (Vice President for Administrative Affairs), Shelly McGrath (Vice President for Graduate School Affairs), Ashley Brown (Public Administration).

III. Approval of the Agenda

The agenda was approved as presented.

IV. Approval of the Minutes from February 5, 2008

The minutes were approved as presented.

Following the approval of the minutes, the Council observed a moment of silence in remembrance of the shootings at NIU.

V. Guest Speakers

  A. Todd Siegler, Director of Campus Police

            1.  Mr. Siegler spoke about what SIU would do in the event an incident such as the shootings as Virginia Tech or NIU occurred here.

  B. Dr. Rosemary Simmons, Director of the Counseling Center

            1.  Dr. Simmons spoke about what services the Counseling Center offers to students and policies created in the past year to allow the Counseling Center to keep an eye on students having emotional distress.

VI. Officer Reports

  A. President: Steven Middleton

            1.  Board of Trustees will meet a week from Thursday and will be presented with fee recommendations from the University. Public comments are available for those who wish to speak.

            2.  Still waiting on volunteers for the student elections. That is a paid position. E-mail Steven if interested.

  B. Vice President for Administrative Affairs: Sara Samson

            1.  No report.

  C. Vice President for Graduate School Affairs: Shelly McGrath

            1.  No report.

VII.    New Business

A. Fee Allocations - 

            1.  Women’s History Month Panel – Approved funding for this event in the amount of $298.37. 14-3-0.

VIII.    Roundtable Discussion

A.   The council discussed the University not cancelling classes following the ice storm.

IX. Announcements

A.  None.
