Recommended:
Dox, I., Eisner, G., & Melloni, B. (1985). Melloni's illustrated medical dictionary. Williams & Wilkins.

LECTURE:
MWF 9:00 - 9: 50 a.m.

EXAMINATIONS:
There will be four (4) hourly exams given during the semester. The dates of these exams
will be given in advance. Make up exams WILL NOT BE PERMITTED. Of the four
hourly exams, one of them will be a vocabulary exam. A comprehensive final exam (covering MSFS 225a & b) will be given at the end of the semester and will follow the final exam schedule set by the University.

There will be approximately eleven (11) quizzes given throughout the semester. Each quiz will be worth ten points. At the end of the semester, I will drop the lowest quiz score. Thus, the possible total points you could earn for quizzes in this class is 100. Quizzes will be given WITHOUT previous notice. Since I will be dropping the lowest quiz score, quizzes WILL NOT BE MADE UP UNDER ANY CONDITION.

LABORATORY SESSIONS:
These sessions include embalming practice, dissection sessions, supplementary lectures, guest speakers, and other activities appropriate for the class. You will be present the entire lab period or until the instructor informs you to leave. Students leaving early will be considered absent.

Each lab session will be worth 5 points. Grades will be evaluated on participation (both with dissection and clean-up), attitude, proper dress, and attendance. Following any embalming preparation, individuals that participate will be required to shower. (Individuals will be responsible for providing their own towels, soap, etc...)
Any student that is not present, or who is tardy for lab, will lose 5 points for that day. You will be allowed to make up one lab session, however, it must be made up within the same week that you miss lab. If time does not permit you to make up the lab within the same week you miss, you must attend two lab sessions the following week and you will be given an assignment to work on.

At the end of the semester your total points will serve as your embalming lab grade. Since presentations, speakers, and field trips might be scheduled during scheduled labs, the total possible point value for Embalming Lab will be approx. 60 points.

LABORATORY CLOTHING:
Each student will use the locker they were assigned during the Fall semester. All personal items may be kept in the lockers in the shower rooms (this includes books and purses). Personal items will not be allowed in the lab area. SIUC scrubs and lab coats will be required along with a change of shoes. NO ONE will be allowed to participate in lab without the proper clothing. This means you must change into scrubs and proper shoes for EVERY lab. All clothing MUST be kept clean. You must have street clothes to change into after each lab.

Students dressed for lab (in scrubs and lab coats) will not be permitted to leave the lab/locker room area. If you are seen wearing your scrubs and/or lab coat outside of lab, you will lose your lab points for that week. If you take them home to clean them, put them back in a bag to return them to your locker. Society in general does not accept the picture of someone walking around with a scrub outfit on (that may be dirty or stained) with Mortuary Science written on it. Be considerate of others and respect the profession. Don't wear your scrubs from your car to lab. Remember. . . scrubs, shoes, etc... can serve as fomites.

ATTENDANCE AND CLASS POLICY:
ATTENDANCE AT EACH CLASS SESSION IS REQUIRED!!!
Class attendance should be regarded as an obligation, and all students are expected to attend and be punctual at each class session. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of every class. Attendance will be worth 9 points each week. Zero (0) points will be earned by any student who is absent, who walks into class late (after the instructor has begun), who does not pay attention in class, or who does not participate in the class discussion. Students who miss three class sessions will be referred to the University=s Early Warning System.

Please do not talk, sleep, read the newspaper, or work on any other class assignments during the class session. If you choose to do so, you will be dismissed from class, marked absent, and/or cause the class to have a pop quiz or additional assignment.

GRADES:
Grades will be determined on a percentage basis as applied to the total number of possible points accumulated during the semester. The percentage breakdown is as follows:
90% or above earns you an A
80 - 89% earns you a B
70 - 79% earns you a C
69% or below earns you an F

TESTING POLICY: As mentioned above, make-up exams are not permitted. When exams are given I will grade them and return them to you as soon possible. I allow students to discuss questions on their exam grades if handled in an appropriate manner. Students may mark questions at the top of the first page of their exam and I will review their concerns. In addition, you may always come to my office to discuss a grade or to review an old exam. I do not release my answer keys to students, thus it is important when tests are reviewed in class that you take time to record the correct answers for the questions you missed.
