Mortuary Merchandising and Marketing
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The student will learn product knowledge and techniques for merchandising
funeral goods. Topics of discussion will include: burial garments;
caskets; vaults; urns; cemeteries; manufacturers;
and new funeral merchandise and that of the future. In addition,
students will learn small business marketing techniques applied to the
funeral profession. Lecture three hours. Prerequisite:
MSFS 351.
PREREQUISITE TO: None
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon satisfactory completion of this course, the student shall be able
to:
1. Demonstrate a knowledge of funeral merchandise to facilitate communications
with colleagues, sales representatives, and the public.
2. Have an understanding of the component parts of funeral service merchandise,
including materials used, component parts, styles, finishes, dimensions
and functions.
3. Be able to demonstrate conceptual and practical knowledge of factors
and strategies for determining a firm’s product mix.
4. Be capable of establishing methods of determining and quoting merchandise
prices.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of effective methods of merchandise
display.
6. Be able to utilize the techniques for the effective presentation
of merchandise.
7. Recognize the importance of monitoring and evaluating sales.

EXAMINATIONS AND QUIZZES:
There will be three hourly exams given during the semester. The
dates of the hourly exams will be given in advance. Make up
exams will only be given with a valid medical excuse, if you know in advance
that will not be able to take an exam on time, make arrangements to take
it early, not late.
Quizzes will be scheduled and unscheduled and will not be made up under
any circumstances.
ASSIGNMENTS:
Assignments will be given during the semester, both in and out of class.
Assignments will only receive full credit if handed in on time.
ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is required for all Mortuary Science classes. Showing
up late to class will be considered an absence. 50 points of your
grade is made up of attendance, so not showing up to class can adversely
affect your final grade. Any student who misses three class
sessions will be referred to the University’s Early Warning System.
Please do not eat, talk, sleep, read the newspaper, speak out in class
unnecessarily, work on any other class assignments or do anything else
to disrupt the class. If you choose to do so you will be dismissed
from class and marked absent.
