COURSE NO., HOURS AND TITLE: MSFS 410 Funeral Service Internship - Management

LECTURE: January 18 - 20, 2000 T W R 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Room: CASA 70

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will be assigned to a University approved funeral home learning in actual practice situations: functional organization, procedures, and policies of the establishment. They will perform duties and services directly relating to the practice of funeral service as assigned by the preceptor, licensed funeral home staff, and faculty members. These duties will include surveillance of and participation in the execution of total services rendered to a family. The student will perform or assist in the performance of those other duties required for the successful operation of a funeral facility. This will be conducted under the direct supervision of a licensed funeral director. The course is 14 weeks in length beginning January 18, 2000 and ending April 28, 2000.

PREREQUISITE: 2.0 GPA and completion of curriculum major except 411 and 412; concurrent enrollment in 411 and 412.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon satisfactory completion of this course, the student shall be able to:

1. Perform all of the tasks required of a funeral director from the first call through final
disposition.

2. Make pre-need funeral arrangements.

3. Understand the functions and procedures for managing a successful funeral home.

4. Prepare for the National Board Exam.

The student shall actually participate in the daily routine of a licensed funeral director. During the course, the preceptor will provide the student with the opportunity for Ahands-on@ experience with the entire funeral directing procedures from the first call to final disposition of the deceased. This will include, but is not limited to, removals, working visitations, business procedures, funeral home management, at-need and pre-need arrangements, and other learning experiences.

POLICIES:

1. Attendance: The preceptor will develop a work schedule for the student. The student will be
graded according to their attendance and punctuality.

2. Deadlines: Assignments given by the internship instructor(s) are due when scheduled.

3. Reading/Studying: Students are expected to read the compend and study for the National
Board Exam during their internship.

4. Dress Code: Students are expected to dress according to their preceptors requirements and
will be graded accordingly.

GRADING:

The course will be graded as follows:

Successful completion of 12 funeral directing case reports 30%

Completion of assignments 30%

Preceptors evaluation 30%

Assessment Exam 10%

 

Each student must complete 12 funeral directing case reports. The preceptor must approve and sign each report. The preceptor will evaluate the student at the end of the internship. The student will be required to complete assignments during the internship. A list of these assignments will be provided to each student. All assignments must be typed and submitted to the internship instructor at regular intervals during the internship. The student should keep a copy of all assignments submitted to the internship instructor.

The grading scale will be as follows:

A = 90 - 100%
B = 80 - 89%
C = 70 - 79%
F = 69% or below
