Welcome to the Department of History homepage. A history degree serves as an excellent springboard into a wide variety of professions. Alumni of our undergraduate and graduate programs can be found in fields as diverse as education, museum work, business, politics, the legal profession, and foreign service. Our faculty has a wide variety of specializations (from American history to British India to the Middle East, from Julius Caesar to Mao Zedong, and from gender studies to the Nazi Holocaust) and students have ample opportunity to work closely with award-winning teachers and scholars. The History Department offers many opportunities for students to engage in scholarly activities (including being published in Legacy: A Journal of Student Scholarship) and encourages students to participate in a variety of internships. Incoming freshman history majors can even choose to live on a dorm floor specifically for history majors, as part of SIUC's "Living-Learning" program.
