Applicants will be considered for Fellowships and Graduate Research or Teaching Assistantships upon request. Graduate Assistantships are awarded by the History Department in the spring for the coming academic year. All assistantships carry a full tuition waiver. Typically, more than half of our students receive some form of funding.
The History Department also recommends its most promising students for graduate fellowships that are awarded by the Graduate School on the basis of a university-wide competition. In addition, several special fellowships are available to students who have overcome social, cultural, or economic disadvantages. A fellowship, which requires no departmental or university service, is granted for an eleven-month period. Click on the following for fellowship information: financial assistance, graduate fellowships, and minority fellowships.
The University allows M.A. students a maximum of 24 months of financial assistance, including any combination of assistantship and fellowship. A maximum of 48 months of financial support is allowed for Ph.D. students. Students wishing to apply for financial assistance should have a completed application on file by January 10 in order to be considered for an award.
