Graduate Research Tools

 

College of Liberal Arts

Research tools are necessary in both the M.A. and Ph.D. programs. Students enrolled in the M.A. program must show competance in at least 1 tool, either a language or one of the other options. Ph.D. students must show competance in 1 foriegn language and in 1 other tool, either a language or one of the other options.

 

The possible research tools are:

  • Foriegn Language: Completed by passing a language profiency test conducted by the History Department OR by earning a grade of "B" or better in an intermediate foreign language class
  • Statistics (must take both History 493: History and Numbers and History 494: Quantative History)
  • Literary Theory
  • Philosophy
  • Political Theory
  • Social Science Theory
  • Any other field approved by the student's committee

Except for the language fields, research tool competance is shown by earning a grade of "B" or better in two graduate level courses.

 

Individual students will present a proposal to the Director of Graduate Studies explaining the relevance of their research tools to their education.
