Worker's Compensation

Worksite accidents and injuries can occur in spite of everyone’s best efforts. Although we all hope that we won’t be involved in an on-the-job accident, it could happen. If it does, there are some procedures to follow to assure that you receive prompt and adequate medical care, as well as income for lost time due to the injury.

The Illinois Department of Central Management Services (CMS) Risk Management Division is responsible for administering the Workers’ Compensation program for state employees. CMS, in turn, has contracted with another organization - CARESYS - to receive accident reports. CARESYS monitors and evaluates the care received by the injured employee to assure appropriate treatment and optimal return to work.

At the local level, Ms. Jeni Batson from Human Resources is the campus Workers’ Compensation coordinator. She is responsible for assisting employees in the proper submission of reports and medical bills to CMS. Her office is located at 805 S. Elizabeth St. and her phone number is 618-453-6690.

What to do if you have an on-the-job accident
If the injury is life threatening, please seek prompt medical care and then proceed with the reporting of your injury.

For medical treatment that is an emergency, go to the nearest hospital ER or prompt care facility.  Inform the facility that you are treating for a worker's compensation injury and to forward information and bills to:  Jeni Batson, SIUC Human Resources, 805 S. Elizabeth Street, Carbondale IL  62901-6520.

For all other injuries, please follow the steps below:

  1. Notify your supervisor
    1. Notice can be given orally or in writing but by law it must include all of the following: date, time and location.  It is also recommended that your notice include a brief description of the accident and the injury sustained.
  1. Report your accident to the CARESYS Early Intervention 24-hour Hotline 1-800-773-3221
    1. Make sure to provide your name exactly as it appears on your social security card and your current mailing address.
    2. If you plan to seek medical treatment, please provide to CARESYS the physician and/or facility information you plan to utilize.
  1. If you require medical treatment and it is not an emergency, contact your primary care physician.  If you have an emergency, go to the nearest hospital ER or prompt care facility. Please inform the facility that you are treating for a workers’ compensation injury and to forward information and bills to:  Jeni Batson, SIUC Human Resources, and 805 South Elizabeth Street, Carbondale IL  62901-6520.
    1. SIUC employees covered under student health insurance should utilize the Student Health Programs facility whenever possible.
    2. For all other staff it is recommended that you keep in mind the guidelines of your group insurance carrier when receiving medical treatment.  If CMS determines that your claim is not compensable, you can then submit the medical claims to your group insurance provider.
  1. The injured employee or the employee’s supervisor should report the injury to the workers’ compensation coordinator at 618-453-6690.
    1. A workers' compensation claim packet will be mailed to the employee’s home address that was provided to CARESYS.
    2. A supervisor claim packet will be mailed to your supervisor as soon as the information is provided to my office.

    i. All claim forms should be completed in a timely manner. Without the completed packet, CMS cannot determine compensability of the claim.

ii. If your doctor places you off duty or on any form of restricted duty, you will need to provide a written work status slip from the doctor.  The work status slip or off duty slip must be signed by the doctor.

Failure to follow these procedures may affect the employee’s right to compensation for time lost or reimbursement for expenses incurred.
