Undergraduate Admission Application Guide
for International Students

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION CAREFULLY BEFORE COMPLETING YOUR APPLICATION!

Note: This is for undergraduate applications only. (For Graduate School, please click here.)

To apply for undergraduate admission to SIUC, you must submit the following:

  • Application for admission
  • Official educational records
  • Official TOEFL scores if available
  • Financial statement (form included with application for admission)
  • Letter or statement from the bank of your sponsor
  • Other pertinent information

To ensure that your records will be processed as quickly as possible, print or type your name correctly and uniformly on all University documents. Enter your family name or surname where it is required on your application for admission and on your financial statement. Use your name in the same way on all future correspondence with the University.

In completing the undergraduate admission application you must answer all questions, include all the institutions you have attended, and personally sign your application.

If you submit your academic records and bank statement with your admission application, we will be able to consider your application and notify you of admission more quickly than if you submit these records in separate mailings.

You must apply early in order to allow time for postal delivery of your letter of admission and I-20 form and to make travel and housing arrangements before classes begin.

cNew Freshmen with no transfer hours must expect to complete a minimum of 120 semester credit hours in order to earn a bachelor's degree. This cannot be done in eight (8) semesters of only 12 hours enrollment each.

If you plan to enroll for 6 hours each summer, you should estimate an additional $3,409 for summer tuition and fees.

If you take only 12 hours per term, and do not attend during the summer, it will take you 10 semesters, or five (5) years to complete a bachelor's degree. Tuition for your fifth year will be calculated at the higher rate in effect during your fifth year.

dProposed Fees, subject to change

eDouble room with meals. Additional costs will be incurred during university holidays or break periods.

fCESL is the Center for English as a Second Language, which provides English Language training for students who have not submitted an appropriate TOEFL score.

Fees, and housing rates may be changed without notice by the Southern Illinois University Board of Trustees. Tuition rates are guaranteed for 48 months from student's initial enrollment.

You must include a bank statement or letter from your sponsor, with the financial statement attached, and return it with your admission application. (Your bank statement is a letter from a representative of the bank where you, your parents, or your sponsor maintain an account.)

Educational Records

You must submit official transcripts, certificates, or mark sheets from all the secondary schools/colleges and universities you have attended. Also submit the official results of any national examinations, if these are given in your country. If you completed high school in the U.S.A. or in an American high school system, submit scores from the American College Test (ACT) or the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Other students may submit SAT scores for admission consideration, but they are not required to do so.

If you submit unofficial records (those which do not bear the original signature of the institution's representative) you will delay admission consideration because these documents cannot be used. You must submit credentials that have been signed by the registrar, headmaster, or dean of the institution issuing the documents. Photocopies will be accepted if they bear the institution's original seal and the original signature of the school official certifying the documents. Transcripts and other records attested as certified by a notary public or solicitor (non-institutional official) will not be accepted as official. Original certificates and/or transcripts can be returned to you unless the institution submitting the documents indicates that they are not to be given to you. Applicants from Pakistan can obtain assistance in certifying academic records from the United States Educational Foundation.

It is necessary to verify the results of the West African School Certificates. If you have earned this certificate or comparable certificates, you need to apply for admission at least six to nine months in advance of the semester in which you hope to enroll.

English Proficiency--Official TOEFL

You must also demonstrate English proficiency before you can enroll in SIUC courses. If your score from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is 520 or higher on the paper-based test (190 or higher on the computer-based test), you will be granted unconditional admission to SIUC and can begin your academic work. Applicants whose TOEFL score is less than 520 (paper) or 190 (computer), will be admitted contingent upon completion of an English test administered by SIUC's Center for English as a Second Language (CESL). Students who fail to submit TOEFL scores, or who do not submit acceptable TOEFL scores, will be required to attend courses at the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at your own expense, and remain in the program until your English proficiency improves to the level required for University enrollment.

The code number for submitting official TOEFL scores to SIUC is 1726. For information about the TOEFL contact:

Financial Assistance

A limited number of competetive partial tuition-only scholarships are granted on a semester basis to international students. Several are restricted to students who have been enrolled at SIUC for a minimum of one year. Please review financial assistance details.

On-campus student employment is available. If you work 15 hours per week throughout the fall, spring and summer sessions you can anticipate earning slightly more than $4,000.

After you have completed one year of study you may request permission to obtain part-time employment off campus. For this you will need special authorization from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services as well as from SIUC's office of International Students and Scholars.
