IWPA to Sponsor Professional Logging Course

The Illinois Wood Products Association is sponsoring The Game of Logging at three sites in throughout Illinois in 2004.

The
Game of Logging consists of four levels of hands on timber harvesting, emphasizing safety, technique, and proper use of logging tools.  In addition students learn to make decisions that are in the best long term interest of the forest.  These decisions include such things as the siteing of landings, laying out roads, the use of water bars and other Best Management Practices.

Each session lasts one day.  All sessions start at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m.  Lunch will be provided on site.  Also, all sessions will take place in the outdoors, rain or shine.

The instructor for the course will be Joe Glenn.  Joe is a professional logger from Piedmont, MO.  He trained for several years under Soren Eriksson, who developed the Game of Logging in Scandinavia.  Joe teaches the Professional Timber Harvester Program in Missouri.  When not teaching timber harvesting, Joe works as a logger in the Piedmont area.  The Forest Management portion (Level V) of the course will be taught by a qualified forester.
