Since 1998, the IPPA has sponsored an annual competition open to photojournalism students attending colleges and universities in Illinois and out-of-state students interning at Illinois newspapers. It is modeled after the professional-level Best of Photojournalism competition sponsored by the National Press Photographers Association. Since the 2001 competition, Southern Illinois Unviersity Carbondale's School of Journalism has hosted a web site displaying the winning images. Copyrights to all images reside with the photographers. None may be used without written permission of the photographer.
