Learning Objectives:
Tests
4 multiple choice tests, each worth 50 points.
Test 1: February 4, 2008
Test 2: March 3, 2008
Test 3: April 14, 2008
Test 4 is the FINAL exam (non-comprehensives). You can check the final exam schedule at: http://registrar.siu.edu/records/pdfrec/EXAMSP08.pdf
Requirements
Please note: 1) Failure to comply with this requirement will lower your total points for the semester by 10. 2) The instructor reserves the right to give you partial points if you do not write a FULL 2-page review.
The report(s) are due Friday May 2, 2008. Unless otherwise notify by your own instructor.
About writing the concert report(s)
1) Submitting a FULL 2-page, 12-point, double-spaced paper is part of fulfilling the concert attendance requirement.
2) The review/report should include the facts (who, where, what was performed), references to the materials studied in class. What kind of musical elements did you hear in the concert? Talk about sound, tone colors, dynamics, tempo changes, textures, instrumentations, forms, genres etc.... And as an option, your personal critique of the performance.
3) Proof of attendance is a stamped program from the concert(s) you attended. Your program should get stamped twice, once as you enter and once as you leave.
4) Attending one or two concerts EARLY will each earn you EXTRA points based on the following timetable:
Between January 14 and March 16: 10 points
Between March 17 and April 20: 5 points
After April 21: 0 points (attendance will merely satisfy the
attendance requirement, avoiding the 10-point deduction mentioned before).
A list of all approved concerts for MUS 103 is posted at the MUS 103 website mentioned above.
Make-up Tests
Tests missed for a legitimate reason (written documentation is required) can be made up on make-up day. The Make-up test day for the spring semester is April 28, 2008. Time and Location will be announced during the semester. This is the only opportunity to make up a missed test.
Grading Scale
The final grade is calculated as following: the sum of four test scores, plus any extra points earned by going to one or two concerts AND writing the report(s).
A: 180 points and above
B: 160-179 points
C: 140-159 points
D: 120-139 points
F: 0-119 points
Additional Information
I. Some classes (large lecture groups) are split into smaller sections for the Thursday-Friday Discussion sessions. These are groups of no more than 35 students per section. The purpose of these is to review material studied in lecture and to enable the students to get more personalized attention, answering questions and focusing on the listening portion of the material.
II. Test scores will be posted a few days after the exam near the entrance of your classroom. To have your scores posted, you will need to put a 4-digit code of your choosing (like a PIN code) in the Special Codes section of the answer sheet (the scantron bubble sheet). Scores will be posted by those codes. Please do not choose any part of your student ID # for a PIN. If your test score is not posted, you need to see your instructor in the class or during office hours to find it out. No test scores will be provided by e-mail.
III. Please only use a pencil (not a pen) to answer the questions. Using a pen could cause the scanner to read your score as a zero.
IV. Instructors will provide office hours which will be announced in class and posted on their office doors. There will be general office hours and office hours available by appointments.
V. This class is subject to general University academic honesty policy. It is assumed that submitted written work is your own. Plagiarism will be considered a violation of that policy and will be sanctioned based on its severity.
Emergency Procedures
Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to providing a safe and
healthy
environment for study and work. Because some health and safety circumstances
are
beyond our control, we ask that you become familiar with the SIUC Emergency
Response Plan and Building Emergency Response Team (BERT) program.
Emergency response information is available on posters in buildings on campus,
available on the BERT'S website at www.bert.siu.edu,
Department of Public Safety's
website www.d~s.siu.edu( disaster
drop down) and in the Emergency Response
Guidelines pamphlet. Know how to respond to each type of emergency.
Instructors will provide guidance and direction to students in the classroom in
the
event of an emergency affecting your location. It is important that you follow
these
instructions and stay with your instructor during an evacuation or sheltering
emergency. The Building Emergency Response Team will provide assistance to your
instructor in evacuating the building or sheltering within the facility.
