Bachelor of Music, Performance Specialization (Instrumental, Guitar, Keyboard, Voice)
This degree is intended for those who wish to pursue a career in performance or in preparation for teaching at the university level. The degree's preparational emphasis involves 8 semesters of applied study-, recital (MUS 398-1): recital (MUS 498-2) and ensemble participation (MUS 011, 013, 014, 017, 020, 021, 022).
Students study with faculty who are experienced in the area of the specific instrument.
Students are encouraged to attain the highest level of performance by studying the principal applied field throughout the degree program. They are also evaluated at the end of each semester by their applied juries and at the end of the sophomore year in upper divisional examination by all faculty.
Recitals are required of all performance majors (MUS 398-1 and MUS 498-2), Ensemble is required each semester of enrollment.
Music History (MUS 357a) is considered a writing course. Students are required to research and write about musical subjects. Students also prepare written program notes for recitals.
Voice performance majors and Piano performance majors are required to speak extemporaneously on the historical and musical aspects of their pieces during juries.
Students are taught literature at various levels in their own applied lessons, their ensemble rehearsals and concerts, as well as in their music literature courses. Pedagogical techniques are learned through observation and practical experience in applied lessons and ensembles. Pedagogical courses are also available.
Advanced theoretical and historical skills and concepts are developed in upper level courses chosen from the following: MUS 407 (Modal Counterpoint)-, MUS 461 (Applied Pedagogy); or any of the MUS 470 level series (Opera, Musical Theater, Chamber Music, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Solo Performance Literature) Independent study (MUS 499 1-8) is available as an elective.
Performance majors in Voice study foreign language for two semesters. Jury requirements each semester include a cross representation of languages and styles.
