School of Music Collaborative Policy
All pianists who collaborate with enrolled music students for SIUC requirements, and all SIUC students who engage the services of these pianists are expected to uphold the following guidelines.
1. All formal accompanying requests should be made by use of the SIUC Accompanying Request Form, available in the Music Office, and submitted by hard copy with corresponding scores to the Staff Collaborative Pianist. Requests without a completed form or without required scores will not be considered. Accompanying commitments are made one semester at a time, and should always be based on a clear statement of the schedule and number of hours to be spent in rehearsals and lessons, as well as the specific dates/times of all events including degree recitals, juries, or other on-campus performances. Off-campus performances, except in the case of SIUC major ensemble tours, are not included in accompanying services provided by SIUC and must be arranged/compensated separately by consent of the pianist. For additional information regarding prioritization of accompanying assignments and related procedures, please refer to the SIUC Staff Collaborative Pianist Policy.
2. All collaborative commitments made must take precedence over any subsequent opportunities the pianist or instrumentalist/singer may receive during that semester. Quitting after committing, unless for an unavoidable circumstance, is a serious offense.
3. All piano performance/pedagogy/piano music education majors seeking to fulfill their applied piano accompanying requirement (one non-pianist SIUC-enrolled music student or ensemble per semester at no charge) must receive approval by the applied piano instructor for all collaborative repertoire before they may make a commitment. Applied piano students must prioritize their own applied requirements over extra accompanying commitments of any kind, and are strongly encouraged to consult their applied teachers regularly for advice regarding their collaborative activities.
4. Singers/instrumentalists must provide pianists with scores for all music to be performed. Photocopies must be legible and collated before the pianist can begin learning the repertoire. Consult your pianist for specific format requests.
5. Pianists are not obligated to accommodate repertoire or performance date additions/changes requested less than 6 weeks prior to the originally requested performance deadline or which significantly increase the level of playing difficulty for the pianist. Studio instructors should be aware that such changes may necessitate a change of performance date or of pianist, depending on circumstances.
6. Pianists, singers and instrumentalists should be prompt and prepared for all collaborative activities. Pianists should properly care for all loaned scores and return them promptly after completion of an assignment. Pianists should dress appropriately for all performances (see SIUC Applied Piano Guidelines).
7. Instrumentalists/singers and pianists should mutually respect each other’s time and professional standards. Pianists should offer to reschedule if they must miss a planned lesson or rehearsal due to illness or emergency; however, pianists are not obligated to accommodate last-minute requests for previously unscheduled rehearsals, performances, or make-up sessions due to absences by the other party.
