Messages from Director Smoot:

GOOD NEWS FOR PARALEGALS!

According to the Illinois Paralegal Association's monthly bulletin, paralegal are listed as the 6TH FASTEST GROWING OCCUPATION. In a recent Chicago Tribune article, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that paralegals are the 6th fastest growing occupation in the country, with 84,000 new paralegal jobs, nationwide, projected to be created between 1998 and 2008. This reflects a 62% projected upward change in paralegal employment opportunities over that period of time.

A paralegal has the over-all tenth best job in the U.S. according to the "Wall Street Journal Jobs Rated Almanac 2001", by Les Kant. Of 250 careers rated by that publication, that of a paralegal also ranked 11th best in job security, 25th best in environment and job description, 26th best in physical demand and 67th in job outlook. The only area in which a paralegal's career fell in the lower half of those surveyed was in the income, where it was ranked 137th. However, many paralegals attend law school and eventually earn attorney-level salaries. Jobs included in the 250 surveyed included high-paying positions such as professional athletes, physicians, etc. as well as more moderate-paying jobs such as mail carriers and nurses.

Help Available at Writing Center

There are three Centers: the main Writing Center in Faner 2281, Trueblood, and Lentz.

The staff of the Centers welcome all students, not just those taking composition courses and not just those asked by faculty to attend. Students may be seen for either regular weekly or single-visit appointments. Areas covered include getting started on essays; organizing and focusing ideas; developing and connecting points clearly; and using grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation correctly. We do not proofread papers--that is, we do not correct errors for the writer. At every stage of the writing process, we emphasize helping students learn strategies for solving their writing problems in the context of their own writing. If you want to sign up for an appointment or have any questions about our services, pleases stop by. Brochures are available at all three locations. Further information on the services of the Writing Centers is also available at their website, www.siu.edu/~write as is on-line grammar assistance.
