PRE-MAJOR FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What is the advantage of being a student in the Pre-Major Advisement Center?

It provides an academic home while you explore all of the options available to you so you can make an informed choice about your major.  As a Pre-Major student, you are prevented from making a pre-mature major choice, which can save your money and time.

2. How do I choose a major?

As a Pre-Major Advisement student, you can make an appointment for individual career exploration with our career counselor who will assist you in the process of choosing a major. Your advisor and career exploration counselor will encourage you to take classes in areas related to your interests and abilities. Through career exploration and talking with your advisor, you will eventually select an undergraduate major.

3. How do I declare a major?

Once you have decided upon a major, you will begin the process of “Petitioning Out” at our front desk. You will be given a petition form and directions about completing the process to gain entry into the college of your major.  Your advisor will help you initiate this procedure.

4. How long will I be in PMJU?

You can remain until you decide on your major.  Most students have decided on a major before the end of their sophomore year.

5. How do I get advised and registered for classes?

As a Pre-Major student, you are advised and registered in our office by your assigned advisor.   If you are a new student, call our office to make an appointment.  As a continuing student, come in or call during the third week of each semester to obtain an advisement appointment for the following semester.

6. When can I see my advisor?

You will have an appointment to see your academic advisor at least once each semester for advisement and registration. There may be other times when you need assistance as well.  Your advisor has office hours twice a day that do not require an appointment for you to see your advisor for assistance. Remember, your advisor is your “go to person” for assistance with any issues you may encounter. (NOTE:  LINK TO PMJU PAGE THAT PROVIDES OFFICE HOURS)

7. What is a “registration stop” and how can I get it removed?

A “stop” is a restriction placed on your student account that prevents you from being able to register.  Most stops are placed because a final high school or college transfer transcript is needed, verification of immunization is missing, or a financial issue needs to be resolved.   A sheet that provides the office to contact to resolve these stops can be obtained in the Pre-Major Office.

8. How do I drop a course?

You must see your advisor to withdraw from (drop) a course.  If you stop attending a class, this does not officially withdraw you from a course. If it is advisable, your advisor will complete the withdrawal procedure. See deadline dates for dropping in the SIUC catalog or on our Pre-Major Bookmark which is available at the front desk.

9. What is full time and is it necessary to be full time?

Full time is registration for 12 credit hours during a full semester; 6 hours for summer session.  Maximum load is 18 hours fall or spring semesters, and 9 hours during the summer session. If it becomes necessary to drop below full time, consult with your advisor, financial aid officer, and resident assistant.

10. How many credit hours are needed to  have sophomore, junior, or senior standing?

Freshman- 0 – 25 credit hours
Sophomore- 26 – 55 credit hours
Junior- 56 – 85 credit hours
Senior- 86 or more credit hours
Ask your advisor for assistance if you are unsure of how many credit hours you have.

11.  Can I receive credit for a class through examination?

You can take proficiency exams through SIUC.  If you would like to take a proficiency exam, talk with your advisor.  All University CORE Curriculum classes have proficiency exams.

12. What is scholastic probation?

You will be placed on scholastic probation if both your semester and overall grade point averages fall below 2.00 (‘C’). A student on scholastic probation may not take more than 14 hours of classes.

13. Why do you need to know my address, phone number, and e-mail address?

It is important that you keep the University informed of current addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses in order to receive important and timely mail from the University. Correction/changes in addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses may be made at the Pre-Major Advisement Center, the Records office (Woody Hall A-103), the Bursar’s office (Woody Hall B-6), or the Financial Aid office (Woody Hall B-300).
Pre-Major will communicate with you using your SIUC email account and many faculty will use Blackboard, a class management system, which requires an SIUC email account.
