Although there is no mandatory set of courses for
all first year students, most SIUC majors require that you
complete the 41 hours of University Core
Curriculum (UCC) courses. The UCC covers the areas of Science,
English, Mathematics, Social Science, Humanities, Fine Arts,
Interdisciplinary Studies, and Multicultural Studies. In addition, these courses provide an opportunity for you to explore academic areas
of interest.
As a Pre-Major student, you will take these courses early in
your career at SIU. While satisfying UCC requirements, you will
take classes that will allow you to explore such diverse areas as
classical civilizations, contemporary philosophy, human genetics,
world geography, and environmental issues. By taking courses in these diverse subjects, you may
discover an academic major or course of study you did not know
existed and can explore the possibility of majoring in that
field.
As a Pre-Major student, you will be fulfilling University requirements
while choosing a major, and will be making progress toward
your degree. Although
some majors require more hours than others for graduation, being in Pre-Major will not hinder your progress to graduation in a timely manner.
Another benefit of being a Pre-Major student is that you have
access to all of the resources the Pre-Major Advisement Center has to offer. You
may take advantage of office hours with our advisors to get
help with academic issues and other concerns. You will have access to our Career
Exploration services. You can meet with our career
counselor to explore your interests, skills and values, to learn
more about the majors that appeal to you, and to research
potential careers and occupations.
Lastly, being a Pre-Major student does not extend your time to earning a degree or increase the cost of your education. Therefore, whether you remain in Pre-Major for one semester or four semesters. You can take advantage of all the benefits our office has to offer. When you declare your major, you will have a greater sense of confidence that you have made the right decision.
