Student Researcher Profiles

This area of the REACH site introduces you to just a handful of our undergraduate researchers at SIUC over the past few years. Many of the students featured here received REACH Undergraduate Research/Creative Activity Awards (called Chancellor's Undergraduate Research Awards when the program was begun in 1999). Click on the links below to get more information on the students and their research. Also read about a sampling of labs and projects that have involved undergraduates in central roles.

Robyn Reeves and Suzanne Milano

Robyn Reeves and Suzanne Milano worked to document and evaluate the local SciGirls program, a collaboration of SIUC and the community.

Jodi Vandermyde

Jodi Vandermyde worked to determine whether more could be learned about environmental conditions for fish by studying otolilths (earstones) rather than muscle tissue.

Brett Timmons

Brett TImmons' research involved developing natural, biological control of snail populations that carry parasites injurious to aquaculture fish.

Sara Reardon

Sara Reardon's research concerns genetic changes that can result in cancer and infertility in mice.

Matt Wegener

Matt Wegener did research with a team studying an invasive fish, the Asian carp, in the Illinois River.

Danielle Estes

Danielle Estes used sociology research techniques to study the child care choices of college student parents.

Diane Zeman

Diane Zeman studied historical changes in shoreline fish populations in the Middle Mississippi River.

Brenda McCollum

Brenda McCollum explored new directions in a series of watercolor paintings.

Luis Gavino

Luis Gavino applied molecular biology techniques to use in studying DNA in several single-cell organisms.

Renee Lopez-Smith

Renee Lopez-Smith studied the microscopic structures of primitive plants to learn about their reproductive function and evolution.

Randy Williams

Randy Williams designed work environments with customizable components that recognized the needs of text-oriented and visually oriented workers.

Ryan Bank

Ryan Bank produced a documentary about a Polish doctor who saved thousands of lives during the Holocaust.

Phillip Szymcek

Phillip Szymcek studied microscopic life forms and microfossils from Antarctica, work that has connections to climate change.

Sandie Cheung

Sandie Cheung developed a way to make metal nanoparticles with more-uniform sizes and shapes.

Kevin Lucas

Kevin Lucas, a marimbist, composed his own music and founded an unusual band composed of SIUC students.

Jazzika Matthews

Jazzika Matthews conducted a study of teasing and body image in preteen girls.

Jeffrey Russell

Jeffrey Russell identified weed species that harbor overwintering viruses.
