The Independent Living Unit of EDC provides a full array of programmatic services. The primary service areas are independent living assessment, living skills training, driver education evaluation and training, case management, personal counseling, housing assistance, and follow along. Independent living is a transitional program with the objective of assisting each person in learning to live and work independently in the community.

The Independent Living Unit serves Illinois residents who are referred by the Department of Human Services/Office of Rehabilitation Services. They are 18 years of age or older, have a severe disability, maintain self care, and are likely to be capable of living on their own with less than a year of training. The program promotes acquisition of independent living skills, development of good job readiness behaviors, time management, and decision making abilities.
