The Living Center is EDC’s structured, transitional, residential unit. It is an accessible, 20 bed, dormitory style, facility. It includes a living area, a large kitchen, and a television room. Residents have access to an adjacent room with a pool table and ample space for social gatherings and recreational activities. The outdoor area includes a patio, picnic tables, basketball hoop, and space for outdoor activities. In addition, residents have access to the SIU Recreation Center, Student Center, and other local recreational facilities.

The objective of the residential unit is to provide recreation and socialization to a heterogeneous group of young adults with disabilities who are learning to live independently in the community. A variety of physical, social, and cultural activities are provided by the program and supervised by graduate assistants.

The Residential Unit serves Illinois residents who are referred by the Office of Rehabilitation Services. They are at least 18 years old, have a severe disability, maintain self care, and are likely to be capable of living on their own with less than a year of training.
