When the Student Health Center is closed, what should a student do when they are concerned about their symptoms? Should they seek emergency room care or wait until morning to see a medical provider when the health clinic opens? Dail-A-Nurse is available after hours to advise students on what they can do to alleviate their situation and avoid costly, unnecessary emergency room visits.
Trained registered nurses are available by phone from Monday to Friday 4:30 - 10:30 p.m. and Saturday to Sunday from 2:30 - 10:30 p.m. when school is in session. They use medically approved guidelines and their nursing experience to assess patients’ symptoms and suggest the most appropriate type of care. Depending on the nature and severity of the patients’ symptoms, the nurses provide recommendations for self-care, refer to their primary care provider, refer to an urgent care clinic or go to the nearest hospital emergency department. Nurses also provide basic information about diseases, medications, tests, procedures and treatments.
