The Healthy Campus 2010 template was developed by the American College Health Association (ACHA). It provides a foundation for shaping future health plans for institutions of higher education. The template was created through a broad consultation process, built on the best scientific knowledge and designed to measure programs over time. The 10 Focus Issues of Healthy Campus 2010 reflect the major public health concerns on the SIUC campus and were chosen based on their ability to motivate action and their relevance as broad public health issues.
Students need a healthy environment to thrive, and a healthy campus community needs healthy students. The Healthy Campus 2010 model facilitates a unique opportunity for SIUC to influence the health and lifestyles of students now and in the future.SIUC’s health programs can have a significant impact on the health of all students. Nearly every student will receive services from the Student Health Center each year and many more benefit for other campus programs including the Counseling Center and Student Recreation Center.
The Student Health Centers supports the mission of the university by improving the health and quality of life for all students through excellence in education, research and clinical care. The Student Health Center’s new 57,000 square foot facility echoes this commitment. It has dramatically improved the quality of care for all students. It is is one of the largest and most comprehensive in the nation. From clinical care, to medications, to mental health counseling, to sports medicine, to immunizations, to dental care, the Student Health Center provides a full continuum of care. This is a tremendous benefit to patients and is also a superb facility for teaching the next generation of health and wellness professionals.
The single most exciting aspect of Healthy Campus 2010 is the opportunity for the Student Health Center, Counseling Center and the Student Recreation Center to launch a new collaboration that focuses on comprehensive care for the whole person including all dimensions of health and wellbeing. The new facility brings all three centers together for the benefit of the entire campus community. As a team, all three centers are addressing health-related issues to achieve a healthy campus community. Healthy Campus 2010 is our common goal and we intend to make it happen by demonstrating unity and intensity of effort.
