Exams
Each exam will have multiple choice, true/false, short answer, and essay questions. The exams will be distributed during the scheduled class time and will be closed note/book. Make up exams will only be given under extreme circumstances (as determined by me).

Writing papers
Each student is required to write one ten to fifteen page paper this semester. The paper should be in the following format: ten full pages, double spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins, and in an appropriate citing style such as ASA, APA, or MLA. Any form of plagiarism will be handled according to SIUC academic dishonesty policies.

Papers should show (1) clear understanding of the deviant topic (i.e. a good overview of what the topic consists of, using outside scholarly sources and course materials to support that belief, a good overview of the people engaging in the selected topic, and a good overview of society’s role in the deviant topic) and (2) provide a theoretical explanation for the deviant topic (i.e. using theories we have discussed in class to show why people engage in the deviant topic or why the deviant topic is considered deviant by society).

All topics and theoretical selections must be approved before you may begin your paper. A sign up sheet will be distributed for you to make an appointment with me (in my office) on either 2/13 or 2/14. If you cannot meet during these times, I will be happy to make an appointment during a time that is convenient for us both. Papers turned in after April 18th will only be accepted under extreme circumstances.

Journal
Each week, students will be required to write a brief (2 to3 handwritten page) entry in a journal that will be turned in twice during the semester (March 7th and April 23rd). The entries can be put in a notebook or on a stapled set of looseleaf paper. The entries should be about things you have learned from the readings, lectures, discussions, or in class activities. The entries may also be about anything you are having difficulty understanding or are confused about. Five of your sixteen entries much include a discussion of the in class activities we do (see tentative course schedule for these dates). Other than these five, you may choose any of the above discussed options for your other entries. These entries will not be discussed with other class members so feel free to be honest.

Attendance and Participation
Attendance and participation are important components of this class. If you are not in class, you miss out on the discussion and intellectual exchange between yourself and your classmates. Both attendance and participation are required. Attendance and participation will be taken each day. You must be in class the entire class period to get your attendance points that day. Participation points will be given to those individuals who make a concerted effort to contribute to discussions about the material.

Classroom Conduct
This class will discuss sensitive materials at times. For this class to be successful, we must all be respectful of each other’s thoughts and feelings. It is acceptable to challenge a person’s argument, but not acceptable to attack a person. Any student who fails to follow these rules will be asked to leave class immediately for that day.
