Asian Awareness Month 2006

ASIAN INSPIRATION ~ PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE

Kick-off Dinner
Location: Parkinson, Rm. 124, Brown Auditorium

The Saint Louis OsuwaTaiko will perform and present a workshop on an indigenous part of Japanese culture, drumming, dating back more than 1400 years. The literal translation for Taiko is“big/fat drum.” These drums were beaten in warfare to boost the moral of the troops and to fool the invading armies into thinking a formidable opposition was on the march. Join us for a great performance. Dinner will be provided. (U-Card Program)

Movie Monday – Slaying the Dragon
Location: Student Center, Kaskaskia/Missouri Room, 2 nd Floor

Bring your lunch and a friend or two and attend the screening of Slaying the Dragon which is a comprehensive look at media stereotypes of Asian and Asian-American women. Produced by Asian Women United, this fascinating video shows how stereotypes of exoticism and docility have affected the perception of Asian and Asian-American women. Ms. Hema Ramachandran, Assistant Professor, Cinema & Photography, will lead a discussion following the film. (U-Card Program)

Learn to create animals and other objects using the ancient Japanese folding technique. Nominal fee to cover Origami paper costs. (U-Card Program)

Cambodia ~ Past, Present & Future
Location: Student Center, Kaskaskia Room, 2 nd Floor

Kurt Larsen, a graduate student in Linguistics, will give a presentation on Cambodia. Kurt has lived in Cambodia and traveled throughout the country. Pictures will be presented to illustrate the beauty of Cambodia and its people, the temples of Angkor Wat, the Khmer Rouge regime, and the efforts being made to rebuild this ravaged country. Sheridan Prasso, author of The Asian Mystique, takes us on a reality tour from Japan to China to Vietnam to Indonesia, and nearly every country in between. The real-life, human stories behind the images of servile Geisha, obliging Suzi Wong bar hostesses, devoted Japanese housewives, exotic Cathay girls, steely Martial Arts Mistresses, and ruthless Dragon Lady rulers provide vivid portraits of the human side of the region and encourage a clearer understanding of an Asia unclouded by mystique and misty-eyed myths of exotic difference. A paperback edition of The Asian Mystique will be available for purchase at the book signing following the program. (U-Card Program)

Sushi is the marriage of vinegar rice to other ingredients. It is one of Japan’s most popular foods increasing in popularity all over the world. Watch the fine art of making sushi while enjoying wonderful Asian cuisine in the Old Main Restaurant. The $6.25 cost includes demonstration, buffet, and sushi. (U-Card Program)

Sushi Workshop

Work alongside chefs while learning the fine art of making sushi. Cook and prepare the rice and other ingredients, then try your hand rolling it in Nari (seaweed). The $6.00 cost includes the workshop and sushi. Sign up at the Craft Shop on the lower level of the Student Center. Space is limited to 12 participants.
