The Bronze Screen uses extensive film footage to trace the progression of this distorted screen image, from the early silent films to contemporary urban gang movies. It examines stereotypes such as the lazy Mexican, the Latin Lover and the Dark Lady. Ten percent of Major League Baseball players -- and many of its superstars -- hail from the Caribbean island nation of the Dominican Republic . This program tells the story of Felipe Alou, Juan Marichal, Manny Mota and the other members of the first generation of Dominican baseball stars. The film reveals how these men overcame poverty, dictatorship, and civil war at home, and racism and cultural discrimination in the United States to triumph in the big leagues. Nature: Cuba : Wild Island of the Caribbean Through a special arrangement with the Cuban government, unprecedented access was granted to film the island's astonishing diversity of life, which has remained preserved, untouched and unexplored due to Cuba 's isolation. The program features a variety of wildlife, including the iridescent Cuban ant, the bee humming bird and the largest colony of Caribbean flamingoes in the world. The second hour begins in the 1960s, with the introduction of the gringo anti-hero in westerns and the resurrection of the "greaser" in gang films. Latino actors, directors and writers discuss the meaning and importance of stereotypes. The silver screen Latino image turns bronze in the early 1980s, with more Latinos working behind the camera, including Greg Nava, Cheech Marin, Luis Valdez, Alfonso Arau and others. Just over the border in Mexico is an area peppered with maquiladoras -- massive sweatshops often owned by the world's largest multinational corporations. The documentary follows Carmen and Lourdes , where each day they confront labor violations, environmental devastation, and urban chaos in Tijuana . As they struggle for survival, they organize a group for change, taking on both the Mexican and U.S. governments and a major television manufacturer. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Career Resources Information on career planning and careers for Latino students and others can be found at SIUC Career Services www.siu.edu/~ucs ___________________________________________________________________________________ Sponsors of 2006 Latino Heritage Month include: Delta Phi Mu Sorority Delta Psi Alpha Fraternity Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority Fine Arts Activity Fee Hispanic Student Council Office of Diversity & Equity Saluki Rainbow Network Shryock Auditorium Celebrity Series Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity Sigma Lambda Gamma Sorority Student Center Craft Shop Student Center – SPACE Student Development – MPS
