“A Question of Color”
A Question of Color is the first documentary to confront “color consciousness” in the Black community. It explores the devastating effect of a caste system based on how closely skin color, hair texture and facial features conform to a European ideal. It provides a unique window for examining cross-cultural issues of identity and self-image for anyone who has experienced prejudice. Director Kathe Sandler asked scores of African Americans of all shades about their experience with the “color question” – from New York City to Alabama, from teenagers to a 96 year-old great, great grandmother. We experience the psychological and emotional turmoil which the issue engenders in a college president, a mayor, a TV anchorwoman, young rappers and others – including the filmmaker herself. The film is particularly sensitive to the special burden color consciousness imposes on women. Darker skinned women recall how they have felt devalued and desexualized because of the bias in favor of European standards of beauty. Lighter skinned women reveal the pain of exclusion and ridicule because of their presumed sense of superiority. This unusually sensitive film can help viewers examine the complex interplay between racial identity, culture and self-image in society and within themselves. Discussion follows.

Joyce Scott
Artist
Joyce J. Scott, one of the most significant artists living and working in Baltimore today, was born in Baltimore and still lives in the Baltimore neighborhood where she was raised. Sculptor, jeweler, printmaker, installation artist, performance artist, and educator, Joyce J. Scott draws from influences as wide-ranging as her media: from African and Native American experiences to comic books, television, popular American culture sources and the contemporary culture as it exists on the streets of her urban Baltimore neighborhood. For more than three decades, this multi-talented artist and provocateur has created objects of exceptional skill and beauty while offering her own distinctive commentary on social issues such as stereotyping, violence, and other forms of social injustice. This event is sponsored by the School of Art and Design, Student Development - MPS, the Black History Month Committee, and the Fine Arts Activity Fee. Lost in Translation: Women in the Bible
Barbara Zeitz
This program unveils gender in the rhetoric and perspective of the original Hebraic text of the Bible. It decodes the power of translation which allows for judgments and interpretations by translators who introduced misogynist language not found in the original text. It examines verbs and nouns of the gendered Hebrew language that provide clues to a gender identity when referencing man or woman. For example, the word 'adam' can be gender-specific for man, as well as gender-generic for human. It critiques assumed allegories and words undetected in the Genesis story. This program is not meant to challenge any specific belief or religion rather it is an enterprising literary review of the narrative.
