Mission: Plentiful Pintails
At a 2001 meeting to assess and discuss the status of the Northern Pintail population, waterfowl researchers and managers from across North America agreed that a cooperative group comprising public and private organizations interested in increasing pintail numbers would be an effective way to keep the issue on the frontline of research. Until then, little research and management activity had focused exclusively on pintails.

Representatives from interested organizations formed the Pintail Action Group (PAG) in August 2003. Endorsed by the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) Committee, the group operates under and reports to the plan committee's Science Support Team. The Pintail Action Group includes scientific community members from multiple organizations, including Ducks Unlimited Canada and Mexico, Ducks Unlimited, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Canadian Wildlife Service, California Waterfowl Association, California Fish and Game, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and other public agencies, private organizations and joint ventures. The Pintail Action Group's mission is to advocate and support planning, coordination and evaluation of Northern Pintail management and research actions among the NAWMP joint ventures, flyways, government agencies and other organizations. The group's conception, mission, objectives and the pintail situation is further described in the document, "Northern Pintail: Prospectus for an Action Group" (PDF 201KB). The group has identified several objectives:

  • Identify and advocate conservation actions that support joint venture implementation strategies and the research required to evaluate the performance of such programs.
  • Serve as a forum for the exchange of technical information about pintail biology and conservation and focus on the development of new research and improved analytical methods to enhance studies of pintail populations.
  • Produce new information and facilitate directed, retrospective analyses of existing data.
  • Work with joint ventures and other agencies to develop and promote science and communication plans for pintail conservation.
  • Help partners obtain funding to implement research and management programs.
  • Aid the NAWMP Science Support Team, joint ventures and other agencies in developing general approaches for planning, monitoring and assessing pintail management issues on local, regional, national and international scales.
  • Recommend key initiatives to the NAWMP Science Support Team for review and consideration and provide progress reports.

Participation in the Pintail Action Group is open to any organization committed to implementing the group's objectives. PAG representatives meet once each year.
