The Elizabeth Eames Women's Studies Graduate Scholarship

$750 FOR 2008-2009

APPLICATION PACKAGE MUST INCLUDE:

  • Cover sheet with name, address, telephone, and email contact information;
  • Application letter outlining demonstrated interest in and participation in issues regarding women;
  • Two page abstract of thesis or dissertation; and
  • Two letters of recommendation (chair of your committee and another individual familiar with your work).

Please turn in two sets of the complete application, an original and a copy.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Demonstrated interest in and participation in issues pertaining to women; and
  • Promise of a Master’s thesis or Ph.D. dissertation as a significant contribution to women’s issues.

DEADLINE:  FEBRUARY 1, 2008

The award will be deposited into the winner’s Bursar account in July 2008 for Fall Semester.  Proof of enrollment will be required before funds are released.  Please note that this award might alter your financial aid package.

Marlene Rotbart Matten Academic Excellence in Health Research Award Endowment

$1,000 FOR 2008-2009

This award is in memory of Marlene Rotbart Matten, a nurse at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, who while working full-time as Director of Education and raising a family of four children, earned her Master’s and Doctoral degrees at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.  After receiving her degrees, she became Director of Education and Planning at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.  Her education and nursing skills had a major impact on the southern Illinois region, and helped innumerable citizens in the area.  Her research on tissue and organ transplantation had an impact far beyond the local region.  As a mother, teacher, and nurse, she continued to be a wonderful role model for women. 

DEADLINE:  FEBRUARY 1, 2008

APPLICATION PACKET:

  • Application letter outlining current research and scholarship interests, addressed to Dr. M. Joan McDermott, Director, Women’s Studies, Mail Code 6518, SIUC;
  • Two page abstract of proposed research topic;
  • Letter of recommendation from committee chair and one other letter of recommendation; and
  • Proposed budget (detailed explanation of how the money will be spent, including estimates for specific equipment, software, salaries for transcribers, etc.).

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Be a woman;
  • Have or will be as of Summer 2008 enrolled in an approved Master’s or Doctoral program at SIUC; and
  • Be registered for the minimum number of hours to qualify as a graduate assistant unless she is in the last semester of her program (the recipient need not be registered for summer courses).

CRITERIA:

  • Research in a health field, broadly defined to include basic and applied research;
  • Quality of proposal as reflected by the abstract of proposed research;
  • Applicant’s understanding of the details of the proposal as reflected in the proposed budget;
  • Whether the award will contribute significantly toward achieving the goals of the applicant;
  • Quality and significance of research as reflected in letter from committee chair and one other letter of recommendation; and
  • Past evaluation(s) of applicant’s academic performance as reflected in official transcripts.

The Donna M. Summerfield Women's Studies Undergraduate Scholarship

$500 FOR 2008-2009

APPLICATION PACKAGE MUST INCLUDE:

  • Cover sheet with name, address, class standing (junior or senior), telephone, and email contact information;
  • 500 word essay focusing on the applicant’s future plans, experiences,  accomplishments, and how the scholarship would enhance those plans; and
  • Two letters of recommendation from faculty members.

Please turn in two sets of the completed application, an original and a copy.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  • Undergraduate female student with at least sophomore standing;
  • 2.75 GPA; and
  • Full- or part-time student who will be enrolled at SIUC Fall Semester 2008 (this includes transfer students).

Travel Support

Women's Studies provides travel support to academic meetings for faculty and graduate assistants presenting research, scholarly, and/or creative work in women's, gender, and sexuality studies. Please contact the Director.
