Recruiting

The SIU Women's Rugby Team accepts new players throughout the semester. It doesn't matter if you have played before, no experience necessary. We will teach you everything you need to know. Everyone who comes out rarely knows anything about rugby and that is most common and acceptable.

What we are looking for: We have positions for people of all sizes and athletic ability. There are 15 different and unique positions on the field. Some positions require a skilled and fast runner to a bigger and more powerful tackler. You won't really know what position you are capable of until you have come out and practiced with the team.

What you need: The uniform is simple. The only thing you are required to have is rugby shorts, a pair of cleats (most soccer cleats apply) and socks. All of these can be ordered or borrowed through the team. The jerseys are all apart of a kit that the team owns. Each position on the field is represented by a particular number. Since your position may change constantly and so forth, the team takes on the reponsibility of giving you the proper number to wear.

Practices: Practices are held from 4-6 pm monday through thursday. If you feel like practing with us, stop on by. If you will be joining us outside, be prepared to get muddy. Since we are a club sport, we don't have a coach. There are a few vets on the team that have played for a descent ammount of semesters that are capable of teaching you what you need to know. We also have a workout plan from the athletic office at SIU that we use to guide and keep us in shape. (For directions to the Sports Club Playfields where we practice outside, go to the directions page.) OR call our recruiting chair.

Games: Our games are over the weekends. Mainly on saturdays but sometimes at tournaments we will be playing both saturday and sunday. We travel on our own, rent hotel rooms, and schedule all our own games. In the fall semester we play league games. SIU is apart of the Illinois Rugby Football Union (IRFU) which also consists of Illinois State, Western Illinois, and University of Illinois. We play ISU and WIU for the division 2 standing. If we win our games we then advance to the Midwest playoffs for the Midwest Rugby Football Union (MWRFU). The MWRFU consists of teams from Ohio, Alleghany Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Chicago Area, Iowa, Michigan, Indianna, and Wisconsin. The spring semester we play mainly tournaments and a few regular games. Some of the regular places that the team goes to besides the universities listed is: Huntsville, Alabama, Nashvilleand Memephis, Tennessee, Chicago, New Orleans, Louisianna, and Little Rock, Arkansas just to name a few. The rugby season is year round with a break in December.

Rugby is a fast paced and physical sport. You will get a great workout and have alot of fun while playing and practicing. Remember, no experience is necessary and all new candidates are welcomed. We hope to see you out...
